School Profile

Newburyport is a suburban residential, seacoast community located 35 miles northeast of Boston in Essex County. One of the smallest cities in the Commonwealth, per USCB 2020 census data, Newburyport continues to have a relatively stable population of 18,197. The city’s historical architecture is well known, particularly the restored commercial district and residential district along High Street, which features fine examples of Federal architecture. The well-developed cultural and artistic aspects of the city are highlighted by a live theater space and numerous galleries. Fine restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and the natural beauty of the waterfront combine to make Newburyport a wonderful place for residents, and a supportive environment for education.

Newburyport High School is a public, comprehensive four-year school, accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The 2026-2027 school enrollment is 734 students, 9th through 12th grades. Newburyport High School is currently operating a three day five period rotational schedule. Teaching staff is provided with ongoing in-service training through Effective Teacher Training to assist them in employing active learning strategies in the classroom. More than half the teaching staff has earned advanced degrees in their disciplines.

Newburyport High School offers many varied Clubs and activities that range from Arts to Tech and Student Government to Community Service. Current student groups can be found on our Clubs and Activities page.

Students need a minimum total of 110 credits in grades 9-12 to graduate and must successfully complete the subjects included in the Core Curriculum. Semester courses yield 2.5 credits each semester. Each year, students are required to take thirteen (14) semester courses.
