Educational Support Services

In most subject areas, team-taught courses are available for students whose learning styles might benefit from more individualized instruction.  This team concept allows for a wide range of needs to be met, allowing the student to experience success and develop a positive self-concept. 

The Language Lab serves students receiving Special Education services whose academic needs can only be addressed in small highly structured settings and who have been identified with a language-based learning disability. The program teaches a variety of language skills in a unique fashion to maximize school success. Language Lab consists of English, Written Expression and Study Skills courses. Placement in the Language Lab Program is determined by an annual review of a student’s progress and the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The Coordinator of Special Education is available to provide further information regarding the Language Lab Program. 

The Independence Development Center or IDC prepares adolescents with disabilities for adult life. The program is designed to meet individual needs and to provide optimal growth through functional learning opportunities in the least restrictive environment. The IDC is committed to the growth of individuals as members of their community through inclusive education, community based instruction, and employment and training opportunities. The Coordinator of Special Education is available to provide further information regarding this program. 

The Learning Lab is a well-established academic support program that has aided in the improved academic success of Newburyport High School students for over 20 years.

The Learning Lab provides support to help students reach better academic success through a smaller, structured environment to complete classroom assignments, home work and assessments depending on student need. Consideration for placement in the Learning Lab, a tier 3 intervention, is based on the student’s learning profile, past academic experience and/or a recommendation from the RTI team, a teacher or guidance counselor. The goal is to transition students out of the Learning lab once they become more independent learners. 

Students receiving Special Education services, whose academic needs can only be addressed in small, highly structured settings, will be placed in appropriate courses, as determined by an annual review of their progress and their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The Coordinator of Special Education is available to provide further information regarding these courses.
