PREREQUISITES: Must have successfully completed Biology.
This course is a combination of lectures and hands-on lab experience that explore current biotechnology practices used in industry today. Biotechnology is a field that uses products of living organisms to make new products for human use. Topics include a history of biotechnology in the food and medical industry, recombinant DNA technology, transgenic organisms, genetically modified foods, DNA fingerprinting, bioremediation, gene therapy and genetic disease. Lab skills learned and practiced include micropipetting, gel electrophoresis and the use of PCR. Science skills practice include observation and analytical skills.
