Dual Enrollment

What is it?

When a student is enrolled in a Dual Enrollment course, they are able to earn credit from high school and college upon successful completion of the class. Transferability of this credit at the college level will vary from one post-secondary institution to another, but many colleges will acknowledge the dual credit. Depending on the college or university’s policies, a student could receive: earned grade in a course, credit toward an academic major, or waiver of requirement.

All of our Dual Enrollment courses have an associated cost with our partner colleges and universities. Guidance counselors can discuss financial responsibilities and/or with students if they choose to enroll in one of the partnership courses. The schools we partner with have costs that range from $25.00 to $400/course. Deadlines to enroll in these partnerships courses are set by the partnering college and mustbe adhered to.

Our Dual Enrollment Partners

Northern Essex Community College (NECC): Students can take college level courses during the school day at NECC to earn both high school and college credit. The students could take morning classes at NHS and then a class at NECC from 12:30 – 2 pm 4 days per week and utilize the learning center on the 5th day. This allows students to get back for any after school activities. This program allows for 2 college level courses per semester. Each semester college level course is worth 5 credits. Students must have their own transportation to and from NECC.

Endicott College: Each semester, Endicott College runs an evening class here at NHS. The fall semester course is announced in August and the spring semester course is announced in January. Typical costs for these classes are $25.00. We are thankful to the Newburyport Education Foundation for solidifying this partnership.

Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU): Over the past year, some of our teachers have been accepted as adjunct faculty for the SNHU in the High School Program. These teachers are able to teach an approved SNHU class at Newburyport High School. Students enrolled in an SNHU class at Newburyport High School can register and earn college credit at $100 per 3 undergraduate credits (an additional $25 if a lab fee is involved). SNHU courses currently running at Newburyport High School include:

  • 1166 Hon. Engineering Ideas into Prototypes/SNHU EG 110 (Honors): 3 undergrad. credits
  • 0544 Anatomy and Physiology/SNHU BIO 210 (Honors): 4 undergraduate credits
  • 0557 AP Chemistry/SNHU CHM 120 (AP): 8 undergraduate credits
  • 1170 AP Environmental Science/SNHU ENV 250 (AP): 3 undergraduate credits
  • 0532 Environmental Field Studies/SNHU ENV 101: 3 undergraduate credits

Descriptions of both of these courses can be found in the Science section of this program of studies.

We currently have more faculty applying to offer SNHU Course here at high school. If approval is attained, the guidance department will communicate this to students.
