Students in Grade 12 are required to enroll in one semester of Civics & Government and one one semester elective of their preference (students may not necessarily be enrolled in their first choice due to scheduling conflicts or class size restrictions). Civics & Government is offered both semesters and examines the ideological origins and practical applications of government in the United States. The focus is on the federal level; however relevant connections to state and local politics reinforce the curriculum and instructional strategies. All students will complete a major project to reinforce their role as active citizens. Electives in Social Studies seek to expose students to other disciplines in the field that may be of personal relevance or interest. Electives are open to Grade 11 students (enrollment in Grade 11 does not satisfy the Grade 12 requirement). Expectations in electives for classwork, attendance, and self responsibility are the same as any other course. Electives vary in instructional approaches, but often
incorporate research projects, simulations, and alternative learning experiences.
