Perspectives for Leadership and Change, a two semester course, is a partnership among Sheikh Osman Secondary School in Qardho, Somalia; EdVenture Partners; the McCain Institute for International Leadership; and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships. This cross-disciplinary, project-based class enhances academic skills through real-world applications, working with both foreign schools, higher education, and the Department of Homeland Security. The main project, which is underway throughout the year, has students design and implement a social media campaign to thwart terrorism among a vulnerable population, a campain which may be used by the Department of Homeland Security. In addition, smaller projects include making a documentary video to showcase what being a teenager in Newburyport is like, focusing on storytelling and documentary filmmaking skills; a cultural exchange with our sister school in Somalia, which focuses on research into the two cultures of Newburyport and Qardho, Somalia; and a sharing of culturally relevant texts, which includes academic skills built around literacy. This course is cotaught with a revolving group of teachers who utilize their own unique skills for the various projects. Newburyport High School is one of only fifteen schools in the United States offered this opportunity.

(Course qualifies for the G.L.O.B.A.L Citizenship Program)
