This course will focus on two prominent aspects of journalism: newswriting and media literacy. First, students will study the components of journalism by examining journalistic ethics, identifying and correcting biases, evaluating sources for credibility, discussing “fake news” and fabrication, and reviewing the many types of and purposes for journalistic writing. Next, students will learn about the particular skills and compositional techniques necessary for a variety of modern journalistic forms, including blog posts, podcasts, copy editing, and page/web page designing. Students will also practice interviewing and communication strategies throughout the course. Combining knowledge of media literacy and newswriting techniques, students will complete projects and assessments that will prepare them to be active readers and analyzers of news and media in our current world, as well as equip them with essential skills needed to become effective writers, editors, and communicators beyond the classroom. Through this course, students will gain discipline specific literacy skills, collaborate through publishing opportunities, and understand the role of current events in civil engagement. (Course qualifies for the G.L.O.B.A.L Citizenship Program)
