The Junior Literature and Composition course examines the American experience through a variety of fiction and nonfiction genres and a multitude of perspectives. As such, the American social, cultural, and historical context of readings is emphasized and relevant thematic ideas, including the American Dream, are examined. New literary devices and analysis skills are introduced, such as determining how authors use motifs to enhance themes. Building on sophomore year, more advanced rhetorical skills are developed, and writing instruction emphasizes using effective tone, style, and structure to write for a variety of purposes and audiences. Students also develop strategies for synthesizing evidence from multiple sources to write cohesive, thesis-driven arguments. Throughout the course of the year, students complete the Junior Language Arts Mastery Portfolio (a.k.a. the LAMP) through which they collect, revise, and reflect on their work, in order to showcase their learning, growth, and mastery of English skills.
