The Sophomore Literature and Composition curriculum centers on the power of language to persuade and engage. Genres of study, including allegory, the novel, memoir, poetry, and speeches are used to explore how the elements of a text work together to convey theme. Writing instruction continues to focus on the types of expository, persuasive, and narrative writing begun in freshman year. Students are also introduced to basic rhetorical strategies to analyze nonfiction texts and enhance their own argument writing. Additionally, instruction on the purposeful use of varied sentence structure and diction seeks to foster clarity and precision in student writing. Language skills developed in this course include interpreting the meaning and effect of figurative language and determining the meaning of words through contextual clues. The development of research skills includes finding credible sources, selecting effective evidence to support claims, and accurately citing sources using MLA format. Preparation for the Grade 10 MCAS ELA in March is built into instructional strategies and assessments throughout the curriculum. This course culminates in the completion of the Sophomore Exposition, a research paper and presentation on a topic of global significance.
