The Freshman Literature and Composition curriculum explores how and why storytelling functions as an essential element of the human condition. Students read texts from a variety of genres including mythology, the epic, drama, poetry, the novel, and biography. The development of analytical skills in response to literature, including drawing inferences and analyzing an author’s use of literary techniques, is emphasized. Expository, persuasive, and narrative writing are addressed with a focus on composing multi-paragraph essays. The tools for the application of accurate MLA research format and correct standard English conventions are also introduced. Throughout the year, students produce a Freshman Portfolio through which they revise their writing, reflect on their growth, and evaluate and select their best work.
