Math
RequirementTop of Page
Newburyport High School requires that all students complete 3 years of study in Mathematics.
SequenceTop of Page
Newburyport High School offers a variety of sequences for students in the study of mathematics. We have found that having options to address individual student strengths and/or needs and assuring appropriate placement is key to students being successful in high school math. Additionally, students can move between various levels depending on academic performance and teacher recommendation. A traditional college preparatory math sequence should include Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.
PlacementTop of Page
Students entering Newburyport High School will receive placement recommendations from their eight grade teachers. Students must receive a C or higher in a college prep level course in order to move on to the next course of the sequence. To move up a level the requirements differ depending on course and level. For specific details about the Honors placement process please refer to the Program of Studies page 11. When making student placement recommendations all teachers take into consideration a student’s skill set, their motivation, their study habits, as well as their classroom grades.
